Zhaga and the IoT-Ready Alliance Join Forces for IoT
In December 2018, the Zhaga Consortium launched the New Zhaga program, aiming to establish standards for connectivity and the Internet of Things (IoT) applied to lighting. Today, Zhaga and the IoT-Ready Alliance announced their collaboration to create a single set of connectivity standards.
👉 The goal is clear: to enable luminaire manufacturers to develop scalable and IoT-compatible products, thereby avoiding rapid obsolescence.
IoT Interfaces: A Challenge for Smart Lighting
All luminaire manufacturers must anticipate the shift toward smart lighting. However, many wired and wireless connectivity options are in competition. To meet this challenge:

the IoT-Ready Alliance was founded two years ago, with the support of Tridonic and Zumtobel,

Zhaga, for its part, has standardized the mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal interfaces of luminaires.
Thus, the merger of the two approaches provides a consistent and universal standard, strengthening Zhaga’s position in the international market.
👉 Concrete example: Zhaga Book 18 defines an interface for adding connectivity modules to outdoor luminaires. Book 20, currently in preparation, will cover indoor luminaires.
LightingEurope: A New President for a Strategic Vision
In parallel, LightingEurope, the association representing European lighting manufacturers, has appointed a new president: Lionel Brunet, CEO of the Syndicat de l’Éclairage in France.
He succeeds Peter Hunt for a two-year term. Furthermore, he affirmed his commitment to promoting:

and a common European strategy to support innovation.

The LIA in the UK: A New Luminaire Testing Method
The Lighting Industry Association (LIA), based in the UK, has announced an unprecedented program of streamlined photometric testing for luminaires.
Traditionally, two options were available to manufacturers:

Outsource testing to an accredited laboratory,

Or invest in very expensive equipment (goniometers, integrating spheres).
A Simplified and Certified Method
The new system is based on the Viso Systems LabSpion goniometer, which is more affordable and easier to set up than traditional models.
