D. Pregno velodrome in Villemur-sur-Tarn: an LED lighting study for rugby and the velodrome

A solution designed with 40 LED floodlights of 1,500 W on four 27-metre masts, for a calculated average illuminance of 272 lux on the rugby area.

A dual-use facility

The D. Pregno velodrome in Villemur-sur-Tarn combines a cycling track with a central area dedicated to rugby. The NOVETI lighting study covers an overall footprint of 187 × 102 metres, within which lies a reference rugby area of 144 × 70 metres.

The challenge is to design the lighting taking into account the geometry of the facility, the height of the masts and the visibility needs on the playing surface. The rugby area is studied using the FFR E4 level as the design reference in the file.

The solution selected in the study

Configuration studied: 40 NOVETI M22A1500S floodlights, four 27 m masts and a total power of 60 kW.
Configuration studied: 40 NOVETI M22A1500S floodlights, four 27 m masts and a total power of 60 kW.

The configuration is based on 40 NOVETI M22A1500S floodlights of 1,500 W, combined with a 130° × 25° optic. The floodlights are spread over four masts, at a mounting height of 27 metres. The planned total power is 60 kW.

Using a single model aims to simplify the preparation of the installation and to limit installation errors. The aiming of the floodlights and the choice of optics contribute to the distribution of light over the surfaces studied.

The results of the photometric study

Results calculated on the rugby area: average of 272 lux and U₀ uniformity of 0.79 on the 25-point grid.
Results calculated on the rugby area: average of 272 lux and U₀ uniformity of 0.79 on the 25-point grid.

On the 25-point rugby grid presented in the file, the calculated average illuminance reaches 272 lux. The minimum is 214 lux and the maximum 348 lux. The U₀ uniformity, corresponding to the ratio between minimum and average illuminance, is 0.79. The ratio between minimum and maximum reaches 0.62.

The file also indicates a maximum glare rating GR of 46 and an upward light ratio ULR of 0% for the configuration studied. On its own, this ULR indicator does not quantify light reflected by the ground or nuisance to neighbouring properties.

An additional eight-point check is included in the study: 246 lux on average, 227 lux minimum and 281 lux maximum, with a uniformity of 0.92.

These values are calculation results from the photometric study. Acceptance of the installation and any federation classification depend on the applicable checks after installation.

Equipment designed for operation

The documentation supplied for the M22A.S range describes an aluminium construction, 304 stainless steel fasteners and IP66 protection. It also mentions 20 kV surge protection, an inrush current limiter and a separate power supply. For the 1,500 W version, the stated weights are 25.6 kg for the floodlight and 7.9 kg for the power supply unit.

A C5 marine-grade anti-corrosion version is offered as an option in the range documentation. This option is not a confirmed feature of the equipment selected for this project.
